Some like myself, however, were pleased to see some fresh faces and effects for the modern day version. In "The Beginning", we now get a prequel to that film with some familiar faces as well. This film does a great job of showing us the origins of many things we viewed with the Hewitt family from the 2003 movie. From how the sheriff lost his teeth to Leatherface's beginning as an infant, the film puts an origin to everything including the chainsaw to how Monty lost his legs. The film has a great pace to it as it sticks to a plot that centers on four teenagers who are driving across the country. Some small dilemmas add some flair to the trip as one of the young men is trying to figure out how to tell his pal that he does not want to report for duty after being drafted for Vietnam, and instead wants to go to Mexico with his girlfriend. As the four set out, they are soon to discover a hell that only the Hewitt family could unleash upon them. The directors did a great job in taking the time to set up the characters in this film, as well as some unique and suspenseful drama that leads up to the usual carnage. The setting is perfect as we learn the origins of the Hewitt family and see many tie-ins with the 2003 film. Former Marine and highly regarded actor R. Lee Ermey stars again as Sheriff Hoyt, whose dilapidated mansion of mayhem houses the nephew known as the legendary "Leatherface". The themes of capture and escapism are intertwined with the scary and sadistic backwoods family in the middle of a Texas wasteland. Even the old slaughterhouse that was seen at the end of the 2003 film takes center stage once more, adding to the storyline of the origin of Leatherface. I enjoyed the original series somewhat and although understand the snubs that die hard fans give this new series, I still think it should be given a chance. These are dark, and the solitude of the rural setting only helps the feeling of despair that the victims evoke in the film. Macabre Madness at its finest, TTCM has new life in "The Beginning" and with twists and turns around every corner, have cast a new spotlight on an old story. For this type of genre, it's well done and has much better actors and cinematic appeal than most.
