This review is from: Frankenstein Unbound (VHS Tape)
I love Frankenstein movies but this story is absolutely horrible, choosing to blend classic horror with really cheap Sci-Fi. Yet another time transportation film gone wrong, we find a future scientist (played by John Hurt) and his silver "Knight Rider" intelligent car sucked through a worm hole back into Mary Shelley's era. No one seems at all horrified by an over the top automobile speeding around the pristine Swiss countryside but as usual the Frankenstein monster is causing quite a stir. Raul Julia is Dr. Frankenstein and completely overacts most of the time that he appears in this film. Bridget Fonda (complete with fake English accent) is the beautiful writer to be, Mary Shelly. In this film Shelley falls for the future by taking a joy ride with Hurt in the "car" without the slightest blink of an eye. Intermingled in the cast are the characters of Lord Byron and Percy Shelley but they don't really have much to do with the story other than their relationship with Mary Shelley. The actual Frankenstein creature in this movie is angry, intelligent and made up to look more like a "Hellraiser" reject or someone who went to a really bad plastic surgeon rather than Dr. Frankenstein! The monster has lost all of the innocence and fear that the original creature had and thus the entire reason for liking him in the first place. The monster kills the good Doctor's fiancé and has a "woman" created for himself, but here we find the worst acting ever as the "woman" comes to life through the longest fake orgasm I have ever witnessed on film! Really bad!! I am surprised they were ever able to shoot this scene in seriousness I suppose it is the only saving grace in hiring great actors to shoot a bad film. The laser frying scene at the end is just pure stupidity and should have been left for an 80's disco movie. In this film you love to see the monster fried, he has no redeeming value. In my opinion this film should have been bound up and never released!
