However, not all in this genre should be compared to that masterpiece. This film stands on its own four legs just fine --lol! This film is the brainchild of David E. Kelly of Picket Fences, Ally McBeal, and other such TV gems. Here he puts together a fine cast of screwball characters, intelligent and funny dialogue, and some geniunely scary scenes of brutality with a limo-sized gator. Bridget Fonda brings an Ally McBeal-like presence to the role she plays as museum scientist who just got ditched by her boss who then finds an excuse to get her out of the office so he can continue a fling with her best friend who works there. Their confrontation is hysterically funny and quite sad at the same time which is what Kelly is brilliant at bringing to both the small and big screen. Bill Pullman is perfect with his typical wry sense of humor, boyish charm, and reluctant hero bit. Oliver Platt is . . . well . . . just playing Oliver Platt only as an expert on crocks. He is a solid actor, but plays the same kind of role over and over again very much like Jack Black who played . . . Jack Black in the recent King Kong. Actually, he was Carl Denhem, but you get my meaning. The sheriff in this story is his nemesis and is absolutely terrific. Sorry, I don't recall or know that actor's name. Betty White steals the film out from everyone in the best role of the film. Her in-your-face, foul-mouthed, but cute grandma looks have you holding your stomach with laughter every time she's on the screen. Not many mature actresses could have pulled this role off as effectively as White did. This is a film with great repeat value and is very much along the lines of "Godzilla" and "Tremors" as noted by a top "Spotlight" review. Be warned though, as humorous and light-hearted as the humor often is in this flick, it IS violent and graphic in the attack scenes. Lastly, while I have your attention, let me recommend another outstanding "us against it" genre film that receives very little attention, but is outstanding. That film is Prey with Bridget Monyhan of I, Robot fame.
