This review is from: American Wedding - Unrated (Widescreen Collector's Edition) (DVD) I didn't care that much for the first American Pie. Yeah, it had its moments, but there was too much wasted time with other scenes that went nowhere. American Pie 2 was much better, with non-stop laughs and a good story (I can't believe I just said that). With American Wedding, it's basically a combination of the previous two. There are a lot of laughs, but also some scenes that should've ended before they were halfway over. It's not bad by any means, it's just that the director seemed to have some extra film to waste, so he let the actors go nuts from time to time. Overall, I place American Wedding second in the trilogy as far as quality goes. If you haven't seen an American Pie movie before, you're in for pure "guy" fun. The movie starts out with Jim proposing to his band camp sweetheart, Michelle in a fancy resturant. The thing is, he forgot the ring, and his good ol' dad's there to deliver it to him. It's just too bad that Michelle's delivering something else to Jim under the table while he gets a talk from his dad. Jim embarasses himself as usual, but proposes, and the wedding's on. Jim and his friends have a little party, congratulating the couple on their big news...but Stiffler's not invited. He shows up anyway, now an assistant highschool gym teacher with a bus, and ruins things as usual. Yeah, the forumla's the same as the last two movies as far as the characters go, but were you expecting anything different? Jim is ultimately looked down upon by Michelle's parents as a result, and he tries to win them over while embarassing himself over and over again. In fact, Jim's side-plot in winning their approval is identical to that of Greg Focker's in Meet the Parents. If you've seen that movie, you'll see a big connection here. Jim does remind me a lot of Ben Stiller's character as well. But Michelle comes from a rich, frumpy family, and wants an expensive dress that Jim can't quite find. He and the others go on a wild goose chase for the designer, which leads them to a gay bar where Stiffler has a dance off with a friend of the designer: Bear. Check off the dress, now it's time for the bachelor party, wedding rehersal, flowers, and much more. While this movie features most of the original movies' cast, this is Stiffler's movie. He steals every scene he's in, and is in attack-mode for most of the movie. His sub-plot involves him trying to get with Michelle's sister by acting his own total opposite to win her over [after learning that she's a virgin]. This doesn't go well with Jim's other friend, Finch, who did a little something with Stiffler's mom on two occassions. Needless to say, the two are rivals during these scenes with Stiffler and Michelle's sister since they both have the hots for her. Oh, and Jim's other friend, Kevin, is here too, but he does absolutely nothing. What a loser of a friend. American Wedding, while not exactly a movie with a deep-plot, had me into it. I wanted to see what would happen next, and I never once thought about turning it off to do something else for a while- something that most comedies from the same year it was released had me do. Most of the characters were great- Stiffler is at his best, Jim never fails to do something wrong, Michelle has more than 5 lines this time around, Stiffler's mom looks great as usual and has some nice dialogue near the end, and of course, Jim's dad is great in every scene he's in. There was one minor problem for me in casting Fred Willard as Michelle's richie-rich dad. He doesn't get that many jokes because of this character, but he did the best he could with his lines. Oh, and for those that absolutely hate Stiffler, you'll love watching him eat "chocolate". The picture quality was what I expected for this movie, which was good. There's something funny though- it gets much better during the bachelor party scene. Gee, I wonder why. There's a layer change a little over an hour into the movie, and is noticable on certain dvd players. As for the audio, it's all good. This movie is more dialoge driven than the other two, and everything can be heard perfectly. With this "unrated" edition, there are a few more features on the disc, though most of it is added nudity and added dialogue in the commentary tracks. First, there are two commentaries by Sean William Scott and the director, and then one with Jason Biggs, Allyson Hannigan, Eddie Kaye Thomas and the useless Thomas Ian Nichols. The track with the 4 actors isn't that great. There are a lot of times where they don't talk at all, and when they do, it's to make a small joke, and no one really laughs at it. They talk a little about behind-the-scenes stuff, and that's really all there is to this track. The one with Sean William Scott is much better. He and the director joke around constantly and go into good detail about some scenes and what they had to change as far as dialogue goes. Scott gets all happy when he sees scenes added back in for this unrated version. Later on, he also goes into how he got the role of Stiffler. 'kinda cool. The deleted scenes are pretty good for the most part. One that I wish had stayed in was after Michelle tries to make an excuse for Jim's pubic hair incident to her parents, saying that he's Jewish. Her dad then goes, "those Jewish people! They'll cut anything below the waist!". Priceless. There's also a much longer segment where Stiffler talks to a blowup doll during the bachelor party. Outtakes aren't anything special- mostly goofed up lines. Stiffler Speak just goes on about how the character talks, and the director shows us how to talk like him (god forbid) by taking something incredibly obscene and putting it at the end of a normal sentence. As if we didn't know how to talk like him after 3 movies. There's a short featurette about the bachelor party scene, mostly showing how they prepared everything, a mock-up wedding video for Jim and Michelle, a video diary with Nikki Ziering which is her preparing for the movie's release, and a featurette on Jim's pubic hair incident. All the featurettes are short, none being over 10 minutes, but you get some funny stuff to watch. You won't believe the number of wigs they used to make that last scene. All in all, these are some good extras. Like I said, this was a good end for the series. While I've heard rumors of "American Baby", I'm doubting that thing ever comes out. How the hell do you put a scene with nudity in the middle of a movie (AP plot forumla according to the director) that revolves around a baby? Either way, if you got anything out of the last two movies, or are some pre-teen in need of a nudity fix, check out American Wedding. Also, if anyone out there knows what Jim's dad says near the end when he goes, "Son, I have to tell you something" and then Jim goes, "I know dad"...and they just walk off, please let me know. The commentary tracks say nothing about this, and I'm left in the dark. Jim's dad hints at nothing prior to this as to what it could be. Unless it's leftover footage from the unused "dying grandma" bit, I have no idea what it could be.  Comment | Permalink |  function showYesNoCommunityResponse(uId,result, value) { var msgLayer = getElement("thanks" + uId); if ( result == "SUCCESS" ) { msgLayer.innerHTML = "Thanks for the valuable feedback you provided to other Amazon.com readers and reviewers.
